Joyful Noise

Derek_1I have not yet raved here about Derek Trucks. If you don't know about him yet, you are missing out on one of the most promising and musically awakened players of the new century. Check him out now !

I'll most likely talk about him at length in a review of his recent Live at Georgia Theatre, but in the meantime, you can listen to his live stuff for free thanks to the amazing initiative of one Greg Cohoon. Greg has started a web radio broadcasting bootleg live recordings authorized by the artist. Sure, the quality is uneven, but more often than not, these recordings are very pleasant to listen to and they will allow you to grasp the genius of Derek's slide playing for free. I should add that since these recordings are authorized by the artist, there is nothing illegal about this whatsoever, just in case you're wondering. You will find said web radio on http://radiodtb.com/

If you like what you hear, make sure you go and buy some of Derek's records, too ! And if you're interested in seeing Derek and his band as well, you can head to Tamera's website. Tamera Morgan is a talented photographer who specialises in musicians and her website holds litterally hundreds of Derek's shows captured for posterity. The photo presented here is one of hers.

The community of Derek Trucks fans is slowly growing, and some of them are very active on the web. Perhaps one of the most amazing sites for Derek Trucks fans is DTBase, which lists all the known setlists for Derek's shows dating back to 1990 with links to the Music Archives when these shows have been recorded. Additionally, DTBase keeps an extensive list of articles published about Derek. If you already know Derek and want to dig deeper into his music, this is the place to explore.

Finally, if you read French, you can head to a French fanzine called La Gazette de Greenwood in which I wrote a lengthy article about Derek.

More about Derek later !

Thanks for the kind mention of Radio DTB. The project is a lot of fun to work on and I hope people enjoy listening to it. I'd like to point out that one of the reasons this project is possible is the extensive wealth of live recordings available for free and legal download from the Live Music Archive. The people who record these shows and them make them available to the community at large do a great service for us all. The work I do would not be possible without such great material to choose from. So, thanks to the tapers as well!

Hi. I just now found this site. I'm more into classical myself but I'm always thrilled to find another good music blog.

There are also 362 live recordings of Derek Trucks shows at archive.org, freely available and approved by the artist. I would also reiterate Ben's comments about supporting the artists who are so willing to share their work, either by buying their commercial releases or attending their shows. They are doing a good thing, and deserve our support.
